Maria Reva writes fiction and opera libretti. She was born in Ukraine and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. Among many honors, her debut novel Endling was longlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, the Climate Fiction Award, and the Dublin Literary Award. The Christian Science Monitor calls it “bold and blistering…a shape-shifting, snail-hugging, war-weary, fist-shaking blast of a book…. It’s a rare debut novelist who can combine a seemingly random set of topics and make them cohere. Maria Reva wraps together serious subjects like war and extinction into an entertaining and meaningful book.” The Los Angeles Times says, “Endling is a forceful mashup of storytelling modes that call attention to its interplay of reality and fiction — a Ukrainian tragicomedy of errors colliding with social commentary about the Russian invasion.” Reva’s story collection, Good Citizens Need Not Fear, set in an apartment block in Ukraine, won the Kobzar Book Award and was a finalist for the Writers’ Trust of Canada’s Fiction Prize. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, McSweeney’s, The Wall Street Journal, Granta, The Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. She won a National Magazine Award in 2019. In November 2022, she was included on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s list of sanctioned Canadian citizens who are forbidden from entering Russia.
